DPhil Zoology - Ornithologist

Dr. Juan Carlos T. Gonzalez earned his BS and MS degrees in Zoology from the University of the Philippines Los Baños. He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in Zoology at Edward Grey Institute for Field Ornithology at St. Anne's College, University of Oxford, through the Ford Foundation International Fellowship Program. He has completed nearly 100 published scientific papers, book chapters, reviews and technical articles, both printed and online. He also hosted the Studio 23 TV show "Explorer" and has guested in over 30 Radio/TV programs. Dr. Gonzalez has been involved in national programs of DENR, BFAR, and DOST, led to numerous seminars, workshops and trainings on biodiversity surveys and wildlife identification. His works made valuable contributions to natural history research and biodiversity conservation education in the Philippines and promoted ornithological studies and evaluation of threatened species. His monumental work on the origin and evolution of the world's hornbills has led to a better understanding of their taxonomy, distribution, and status.

Dr. Gonzalez's extensive work on Philippine wildlife has brought numerous local and international awards, including the 1992 L.S. Cuy Memorial Award, 2002 UPLB CASAA Outstanding Alumni for Extension; 2008 UPLB Outstanding Teacher Award for Biological Sciences; 2008 Ford Foundation International Fellowship; 2011 NAST Outstanding Young Scientist Award for Zoology; Extraordinary OZOOMS Award 2018; 2018 Outstanding UPLB Alumni for Biodiversity Conservation and Education, 2019 UPLBAA The Outstanding UPLB Alumnus for Education and Research; and conferred as UP Scientist in 2014 and 2019. Dr. Gonzalez was the recipient of nine UP International Paper awards and four Professorial Chair awards. Dr. Juan Carlos T. Gonzalez was the UPLB Museum of natural history Director from 2015-2021. He presently serves as the curator for birds at the UPLB Museum of Natural History and a professor of zoology at the Animal Biology Division of the Institute of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Baños.
